Start with the floor plan

Decide where the bed, the chair and the table go before packing. On the day, beds go together first.

A move from a house into a smaller villa or condo goes better when the plan starts from the new place. Get a floor plan, or measure the rooms, and decide where the bed, the favorite chair and the dining table will go before anything is packed.

We work from that plan with you. Pieces that won't fit are found on paper, while there's still time to decide what to do with them, rather than in the new doorway on moving day.

On the day, furniture goes where the plan says, with clear walkways and a clear path from the bed to the bathroom. Beds go together first, so there's somewhere to rest when the day is done.

Deciding what moves

Room by room, least-used first: what moves, what goes to family, what is given away or sold.

Downsizing means deciding about years of belongings, and it goes easier in stages, one room at a time, starting with the rooms used least. As you go, sort things into what moves to the new home, what goes to family, and what will be given away, sold or thrown out.

We move what's going to the new home. If some pieces are going to a family member's home nearby, tell us at the walkthrough so that stop is in the written estimate, and tag anything that isn't coming so it stays behind.

Moves into 55+ communities, to their rules

Moving into a 55+ community

Kings Point, Century Village, Coral Lakes and others. We get the rules early so the gate does not hold us.

Delray Beach's 55+ communities include Kings Point, the Villages of Oriole, High Point, Huntington Pointe, Palm Greens, Rainberry Bay and Lakes of Delray. A short drive away are Century Village Boca Raton and Whisper Walk in Boca Raton, and Coral Lakes, Indian Spring and Aberdeen in Boynton Beach, among others.

Communities like these can set their own rules for moving day, covering gate access, the hours a move may happen and where a truck may stand. We ask for those rules early and plan the day around them, so the truck isn't held up at the gate.

The person arranging a senior move may live in another state. We can do the walkthrough by video with your parent at home and you on the same call, and send the written estimate to both of you.

Florida law requires a mover to tell you in writing about any employee with certain felony convictions who will have access to the home. When you're arranging a move for someone else, that's one more thing to read before anyone signs.

Questions about senior moves and downsizing

All questions
Who should sign if I'm arranging the move for a parent?

Decide that between you early on. Florida law requires the estimate and contract to be signed or acknowledged and dated before any work starts, so whoever signs should have read them and agreed to the dates and costs.

Do you unpack at the new home?

Yes, if you'd like us to. A good place to start is the kitchen, the bedroom and the bathroom, so what's needed on the first night is in place. Our packing and unpacking page explains the options.

How far ahead should we start planning?

Start the floor plan and the sorting as soon as the new home is settled, since those take longer than the move itself. Book the move once you know the date, and ask the community for its moving rules at the same time.
